Zyan I know this is irrelevant... but I was just wondering how everyone post with their custom picture under their screen name?

Go to user cp at the top of the page, then go Edit Options, then down the bottom to Avatar and the info should be there for you.

Time patterns

hello all !

Zyan, have you tried to find some patterns within the data sent to device in "SP mode" ?

What you can probably do is:

1. create a sound file with easy recognizable pattern, like 511 zeroes and one 0xffff, or 4095/1 (multiple to packet size).
2. put this track to the MD and sniff the traffic.

it shouldn't be that easy to see it, but who knows ? of course if it's a strong encryption, you'll see nothing. but i'm in doubts that MD's microcontroller powerful enough to decipher a strong one.

another option is to synthesize file with repetitive pattern, like sine wave (i.e. 16 bytes long) and try to see it in the sniff.

I would like to help you, but unfortunately, I have no MD currently, but if you want, drop me an email, i'll have a look at your sniffs.

---
good luck !

wow

Ive read over this post a few times now ( and still dont understand all the tech. stuff) but the research put into it is appreciated.

I did not know that NetMd was not able to record in SP, (which I would use) and it came a dissapointment when I heard. So if there is a way to record in true Sp that would be great.

good work

anybody head about that guy who was cracking the sony code for the abio dogs? this seems like the same thing, lol, very good work zyan, even if i cant truely understand it all.

-about the files using keys. when installing openmg, sony tells u that ur netmd is #xxxxxxxx so on, this might help u somehow. anyway, this all seems overly complex to me anyhow, why not allow openmg to just encode a atrac file at sp, and then let it be transered regularly... also one more thing, real player allows u to encode atrac files....

I think it'd end up being easier to remove some of the restrictions from OpenMG - yeah, it sucks, I know, but if you got, say, 65,535 checkouts instead of 3, and the files sent weren't marked as "protected", then it wouldn't suck nearly as much (or would it?). I'd imagine that it'd be possible to simply hack up OpenMG to do this. Now, it'd probably be illegal to release in the US (DMCA), but it'd be interesting to see if I could do it.

It'll definitely be something I'll at least play with once my unit gets here.

Exclamation1 re: netmd hacking, etc

this is in response to zyan's posts, and also to all others making progress w/ netmd investigations:

my name is mat, and i'm with mindisco.com. we have some possible contract programming work somewhat related to netmd, and would like to speak directly with anyone who feels they may be up to the task.

you can post questions for me here, or contact me direct at matm@minidisco.com

nice work on figuring out the spec so far. hope to hear from interested coders.
