Fatal experince with E10: Deadly Service mode

Hello, my fellow md junkies,

Well, the other day I was searching on the minidisc.org and found a link to the service manuals. I have always wondered what are those for and it happened that I spotted the one for my E900. At the moment of my search I was listening my little E10. I pulled out the manual and I found the sequence on the remote that allow you to enter that stupid mode. The flow of curiosity overwhelmed me and did the sequence on the E10 remote. I didn't believe that the sequence would apply to E10 because the manual was for E900. It worked. I guess Sony keeps the same sequence for the whole current generations of the portable MDs.
After I satisfied my curiosity, I decide to quit the service mode. The manual says that you supposed to take the battery out. As you know, E10 has internal battery so it is not that easy to do. Instead, I tried to reset the battery by switching a little switch on the side. When I pressed PLAY, I saw ERROR on the remote. I decided to take out the battery and power off the unit.
I followed the instructions of how to get the battery out. Unfortunately, it is very very hard to do . I couldn’t take the battery. After numerous efforts, I gave up and decided to let the unit stay with the batter and maybe eventually the battery drain out itself. However, when I press PLAY button, nothing happened. Not even the error message. The unit was dead. I guess I broke something while reaching for the batter.

Moral of my story: Don’t get into the service mode on E10. Or wait until there would be a service manual for the this unit to properly exit the mode.

Sad. I love my E10. I guess back to E900

I don't think it will...

When you remove the battery cover, there is a electic circuit that needs to be remove to reach the battery. I guess, I broke that circuit.

Damn... Stupid me

So sorry for your loss, but thanks all the same for trying it! If no one tried it on their 505/707, we wouldn't be were we are today on that hacking...

Might I suggest trying harder to get the battery out (take it to a jewler, maybe?)

I have but one question - is your E900 malfunctioning? If not, there's no reason to even attempt to go into the service mode. You've learned a VERY expensive lesson due to your curioisty. Good luck.

My strategy is to wait untill SONY releases it in the USA and then try to let them fix it. I am not sure that the Japanese warranty will work though. I guess I have to pay for a repair. I'll see whichever is cheaper: repair or new player

I know.... know...

E900 is fine... it was the manual for it that draw my attention.

ouch ouch and another ouch I've got that insatiable appetite for fixing things that aint broke too but I would never dream of doing that to my E10! I guess when it's released in the US you'll have to pay a hefty sum for repair :/
